AMANDA KONG HWEI ZHEN

Experience

Diagnosed with congenital glaucoma at birth which resulted in visual impairment, Amanda Kong aspires to champion the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Malaysia at a young age. Amanda was awarded the Outstanding Cambridge Learners Award for being the Top Student in the World for Law for the year 2013 by the University of Cambridge. In 2016, she graduated with a Class I LLB (HONS) from the University of Liverpool.

 

Amanda went on to complete the Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) in 2017 and subsequently read in chambers at Messrs Skrine. She was admitted and enrolled.

As an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in February 2019, making her the first blind woman lawyer to qualify for the same position. To further her cause in advocating for PWDs, she joined the Make It Right Movement (MIRM), the CSR arm of the BAC Education Group, in 2019 and is currently the Community Development Manager.

 

Her primary portfolio focuses on projects geared towards advocacy for PWDs and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for this community in Malaysia. She currently co-heads the PWD Working Group of the Bar Council Human Rights Committee for the 2023-2024 term.

Amanda Kong Hwei Zhen

Amanda also conducts and facilitates capacity-building and professional development workshops with the MIRM team, with particular focus on diversity, equity and inclusion for corporates, digital literacy, employability, entrepreneurship and life skills for the PWD community. She also has experience working with different communities and managing impactful and sustainable initiatives with the MIRM team, focusing on areas including B40 alleviation, mental health, women empowerment, promotion of child rights and welfare amongst others. She was frequently invited by the KL Bar and Bar Council to be a moderator, panellist and speaker for awareness events/webinars on disability rights, advocacy, diversity, equity and inclusion. Amanda was recently listed as one of the 20 individuals under the Enable Role Model List, supported by HSBC which champions role models across global organisations who are using their experience of disability, neurodiversity or mental health to enable meaningful conversations and drive diversity and inclusion at the workplace.
